What it is
Glycolic acid is a water-soluble AHA that exfoliates the surface of the skin. Its small molecule size makes it effective but also more likely to sting than other AHAs like lactic or mandelic acid.
Benefits
- Smoother, brighter-looking surface
- Helps fade the look of dullness and uneven tone
- Can help other products absorb evenly
Watch-outs
- Stinging and redness, especially at higher strengths
- Increases sun sensitivity; daily SPF is important
- Over-exfoliation can damage the skin barrier
How to use it
Use at night 1–3 times a week. Start with a low strength (5–8%) and increase only if your skin is comfortable.
Can you mix glycolic acid with…
- Glycolic Acid + RetinolUse at different timesStacking an exfoliating acid with a retinoid is one of the most common causes of over-exfoliation.
- Glycolic Acid + Vitamin CUse at different timesTwo low-pH products in a row raise the chance of irritation, and vitamin C is best used in the morning anyway.
- Glycolic Acid + NiacinamideUse with cautionThey can be used together, but on sensitive skin the combination may cause temporary flushing.
- Glycolic Acid + Salicylic AcidUse with cautionSome products combine AHAs and BHAs at low strengths, but layering two separate exfoliants often leads to over-exfoliation.
- Glycolic Acid + Hyaluronic AcidWorks well togetherHydration after exfoliation helps the skin stay comfortable.
- Glycolic Acid + CeramidesWorks well togetherCeramides help repair the barrier after exfoliation.
